SESSION EXCERPTS
SESSION II - 2 OCT 2019
Need to promote the Gandhian Philosophy of Truth and Non-violence to establish a peace-loving holistic global society.

Dr T S Devadoss

Wednesday

02:30 pm - 04:15 pm

The doctor brilliantly elaborated upon the utility of Gandhian thought and philosophy in the modern age. He explained how the advent of science and technology has ensured that the destruction of the world and of humanity is merely a push of a button away. Thus, it is imperative to educate the hand or hands that hold the button. This can only happen by the infusion of Gandhian thought in the world.

Dr Modi

Wednesday

02:30 pm - 04:15 pm

The doctor stated that she was not prepared to give a speech, but did not need to, considering how close the subject matter is to her and how relevant it is. She fervently believes in Gandhian thought and philosophy and wishes for it to be delivered to the entire globe

Prof Omid Wali

Wednesday

02:30 pm - 04:15 pm

The speaker stated that he is from Afghanistan, a country which has seen perpetual war for more than 4 decades. He teaches Gandhian thought in a region that sorely needs it. He believes that no religion is violent and the violence is merely a result of interpretation. Thus he goes on to postulate that truth is the destination and the means to achieve it is non-violence. Non-violence is the tools of the strongest and the bravest, a fact he remembers all too well considering the bloodshed he has seen. He remembers a contemporary of Gandhi, his fellow countrymen Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan who espoused much the same beliefs. He firmly believes that peace and non-violence is the way forward, not only for his country but for the entire world as well.

Prof Ambika Datta Sharma

Wednesday

02:30 pm - 04:15 pm

The speaker started by reciting a couplet which stresses on peace through non-violence. He then goes on to postulate that being human is necessarily being non-violent and understanding. Without these qualities there is essentially nothing which differentiates us from animals. He then goes on to state that we all have the voice and message of Gandhi already within ourselves. We simply have to find an outlet for it. We must imagine a world where peace and serenity reigns and then try and make that a reality, counting only on non-violence and a fight for the truth. He stresses on the power of our inner voice, something which Gandhiji was attuned to very well, and something we all can attune ourselves to as well.

Dr Manoj Kumar Mishra

Wednesday

02:30 pm - 04:15 pm

The speaker chose a more practical application of Gandhian though and philosophy by claiming that there is no better protest methodology than non-cooperation and non-violence. He stated the multiple instances on the world stage when it was used to achieve political aims. He states that non-cooperation, truth and non-violence can be construed of as a weapon in itself, a weapon against which no one has a true or real counter. He further states that Gandhi predicted the conflicts which are to plague humanity in this digital age, namely environmental concerns. These can be construed as non-typical problems to which Gandhian philosophy can nevertheless be applied for a solution just as it can be used for typical problems such as the ones facing Afghanistan.

Dr Ramjee Singh

Wednesday

02:30 pm - 04:15 pm

The learned speaker started by stating incidents in his college life when there were hardly any contemporary Indians who were considered as philosophers. He stated that after nominating the name of Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore as contemporary Indian philosophers he was told they are not so. Coming from those days he remembers the first place where Gandhian philosophy was taught, the Benares Hindu University due to which today they are so many in the world who consider Gandhi as a philosopher. He states that Gandhian philosophy must be unique as it must be implemented in order to be understood, and that is its greatness as well as its salvation.’

Dr S Parasuraman

Wednesday

02:30 pm - 04:15 pm

The learned speaker spoke academically and clinically of the advantages conferred by embracing the policy of non-violence and the pursuit of truth. He sees the amount of conflict the world over and states the blame for it squarely on the lack of understating of Gandhian philosophy and thought. He believes that if that philosophy was taught the world over, then world peace can truly be achieved.
